Volunteers

Second Helpings is a volunteer driven organization. Our volunteers are our most valuable asset and we could not operate without them. We have an army of over 325 men and women who work tirelessly to collect the donated food seven days a week, 52 weeks a year from all the area grocery stores. They work in three primary areas (Hilton Head, Bluffton and Beaufort), but deliveries are made throughout Beaufort, Jasper and Hampton counties. Area coordinators train and schedule the volunteers to work on specific days. This is where the rubber literally meets the road. Every day a different team goes to the trucks and does their route, picking up and delivering the food.

Richard Whitmore, a Saturday volunteer, has been rescuing food for more than 12 years.

“I really feel fortunate that I have had the opportunity and ability to work for this great organization. It has been the most rewarding experience of any volunteer work that I have done over the years. The common thread that I find in the Second Helpings volunteers is their self-satisfaction of touching others with their efforts. They really don’t need someone saying “job well done”. They feel it with every load they drop off. They are the most devoted bunch of men and women I know.”
