The largest recipient of food from Second Helpings does not look the part, but has grown in the ranks and now receives close to 25,000 pounds of food per month. St Stephens Methodist Church in Ridgeland has operted the St Stephens UMC Food Bank for the last 12 years.
This tiny Ridgeland church, in a depressed area, is led by Helen Schuler, who is a person to marvel at. Helen is a native of the area who left to work in New Jersey as a nurse, but came back to take care of her ailing mother. Helen and her top assistant, her Aunt Nettie, lead a group of six people to run this remarkable food bank. The Church itself has a congregation of fifteen families. In addition to our Second Helpings deliveries, the Low Country Food Bank and a local Ridegeland grocery store also provide assistance. The Church now feeds over 1,000 people monthly ... no on has ever been turned away.
Even more remarkable is that St Stephens UMC Food Bank operates out of a 400 square foot building. In an endeavor to assist Helen, Second Helpings has previously donated a freezer and a refrigerator.
Helen's food distribution system is set up to be smooth and effective. She has certain times for the elderly, certain times for the disabled, and always time for everyone else. No food goes to waste. Helen distributes all extra food to vearious 501-C3 charities in Collerton and Hampton counties. Only the highest accolades can be handed out to this remarkable woman. She does not take a vacation, but may miss an occasional work day when someone is bestowing an honor on her. Being very devout in her religion, Helen is most proud of receiving from the Church the Denman Evangelism Lay Recipient Award in 2011.
