Share the Bounty Raises Essential Funds for Second Helpings

Second Helpings, the only area organization that provides food free-of-charge to partner agencies, rallied businesses and donors to raise essential funds for operational support at its Share the Bounty event on Sept. 20. The Sea Pines Resort was the presenting sponsor for the evening where attendees bid on donated auction items and contributed funds to provide for the maintenance of Second Helpings’ eight refrigerated trucks that are used to pick up and deliver food to agencies in Beaufort, Hampton, and Jasper counties.

During the evening, the prestigious Founder’s Awards were presented. Sam’s Club of Bluffton, represented by general manager John Franklin, received the Food Donor of the Year award. In 2017, Sam’s Club donated 269,365 pounds of food from the former Hilton Head Island location and the new location in Bluffton. Already this year, Sam’s has surpassed its previous year’s amount and has donated close to 300,000 pounds of food.

The supporter of the Year honors was presented to Palmetto Electric Cooperative, a member-owned utility company that provides electric services to residents and businesses in the three counties in which Second Helpings operates. Palmetto Electric’s support of Second Helpings includes allocating funding to provide fresh produce in Hampton County and funding the purchase of a truck three years ago. On behalf of Palmetto Electric Trust Chairman John E. Kirkland and the members of the coop, Tray Hunger, vice president of marketing and public relations, accepted the award.
