Donate the Value of a Meal to Help Feed the Hungry

Give the value of one meal to help feed the hungry. That is what is being asked of area residents by Second Helpings, the only local nonprofit that picks up surplus food and delivers that food every day to more than 60 agencies. Donate Dinner is an effort by Second Helpings to increase awareness of hunger in our community and to offer individuals a chance to donate to support our work.

Second Helpings suggests donations of $20 (the value of a fast food meal), $50 (casual dining estimate), $100 (fine dining) or more.

Lili Coleman, executive director, said Donate Dinner is one part of the group’s outreach efforts to offer those who may not be able to volunteer to support the work of the local organization. “We are fortunate to live in a community that cares, where volunteers pitch in to load trucks and distribute food. The reality is that we also must collect money to thrive. Donate Dinner is one easy way for people to help feed the hungry.”

Second Helpings’ Donate Dinner campaign is a part of #GivingTuesday, a national effort of giving back. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving and following on the heels of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season of holiday and end-of-year giving. Now in its sixth year, #GivingTuesday is widely recognized as a global day of giving.

Volunteers and individual donations are essential to the work of Second Helpings, the only nonprofit agency in Beaufort, Jasper, and Hampton counties that rescues food and delivers it to over 60 agencies. The organization collects and distributes over 2.7 million pounds of food annually. It is estimated that approximately 22,000 people benefit from food rescued by Second Helpings every year.
