Second Helpings – Young Volunteers Needed During COVID-19 Crisis

Second Helpings is a nonprofit food rescue and distribution network, helping to eliminate hunger in the Lowcountry. We work with our food providers and our distribution agencies to help those in need obtain nourishing food.

Second Helpings is many things to many people. We are a major resource for local food pantries and soup kitchens and we offer grocery stores a chance at community collaboration. But most importantly, we offer hope, stability and empowerment to people in our community that need help in getting the food they need. Started in 1991, Second Helpings volunteers now supply food to over 60 food pantries, soup kitchens nonprofit agencies and churches in Beaufort, Jasper, and Hampton Counties. We are a network for surplus food to get from the grocery stores to the people that need help. This food would have been thrown away; instead we keep it from going our landfills and being wasted.

Our Food Network services three primary areas: Hilton Head, Bluffton and Beaufort. Each Volunteer Team has a refrigerated truck to use for their assigned pickups and deliveries. The food gets picked up in the morning and is delivered the same day. The end goal is to make sure our Fulfillment Agencies can meet the needs of their clientele.

One of our agencies, The New Life Food Bank, on St. Helena Island, services over 60 people. Your gifts make it possible to provide over 80% of their food. Hear what Saundra Renee, the Director, has stated about Second Helpings.

“She has no legs and came for a bag of food given away through the New Life Food Bank that has grown from 30 bags to 60 in just a few months.  It is the support of Second Helpings that amazes us and play a large role in our success. It doesn’t take a lot of people to make a big impact.”

We can always use more help – financially, through volunteering on a Truck Team, or by helping us manage and expand our Network. The goal of our website is to keep all of our extended family up-to-date on what’s happening at Second Helpings in the Lowcountry and to help those considering a relationship with us to understand how and why we provide such a great service to the community.
